Why Is Certification Important?
Currently, the state of Washington does not require that cosmetic surgery procedures or other out-patient surgeries be performed in an “Accredited” Surgery Center. This means that a doctor can legally perform Tummy Tucks, Breast Augmentations, Liposuction and even Facelifts under local anesthesia, in an unregulated back room of their office.
Are all office surgery facilities required to be licensed in the state of Washington?
Currently, office surgery facilities are not required to be licensed to perform surgery if the procedure is performed under mild IV Sedation or Twilight Anesthesia.
Therefore, it is crucial that patients seeking to have a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure do their homework and insure that their surgery is performed in an Accredited Surgery Center.
Currently, there are four legitimate surgery center accrediting organizations:
- AAAHC – Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care
- AAAASF – American Association for Accreditation of Surgical Facilities
- The Joint Commission
- AOA – American Osteopathic Association
Dr. Pratt recommends that before undergoing surgery that you ask if the surgery will be performed in an “Accredited Facility,” and specifically what accrediting agency has inspected and accredited the facility. Also ask if the facility has Medicare Certification.
Remember, a Medicare Certified facility must pass the requirements of one of these accrediting agencies before certification will be granted.
