Asian Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) in Seattle

Also serving Bellevue, Kirkland, & Everett

The most popular cosmetic procedure Dr. Pratt plastic surgery performs on Asian patients is the Asian eyelid surgery (Asian blepharoplasty). Approximately 50% of Asians have a “single eyelid” resulting in a relatively narrow eye aperture. The Asian blepharoplasty creates a “double upper eyelid” with a well-defined crease and opens up the aperture of the eye, creating a look of alertness and beauty. Dr. Pratt also understands the particular wants and special needs of his Asian blepharoplasty Seattle / Bellevue patients, such as the importance of creating a natural-appearing eyelid that is just the right size – not too wide and not too narrow. Dr. Pratt perfected his technique in the mid-1990s, when he spent four years performing Asian blepharoplasty in the Korean community of Chicago.

Do I need to travel to Korea, China, or Japan in order to have an excellent Asian Blepharoplasty?

Absolutely not! Dr. Pratt’s Seattle / Bellevue Asian blepharoplasty patients frequently comment that they are glad they did not travel abroad to have this procedure done!

Does Dr. Pratt perform the same kind of blepharoplasty with Asians as he does with Caucasian Seattle blepharoplasty patients?

No. Dr. Pratt has performed Asian blepharoplasty since 1995 and understands the uniqueness of the anatomy of the Asian eyelids, as well as the goals of the Asian patient desiring blepharoplasty. Thus, he is very aware of the significant difference between performing blepharoplasty in his Seattle Asian blepharoplasty patients versus his Caucasian patients.

What can I expect during my consultation?

During your confidential consultation, Dr. David Pratt, will examine your eyes and will offer his expert opinion as to what changes will beautify your eyes. Using a special instrument designed by Dr Pratt, you will have the opportunity to show the doctor just how wide you desire your upper eyelid. Dr. Pratt, will then take measurements in order to ensure the eyelid width that you desire is the width that you achieve.

What is the difference between the Suture Method and the Incision Method?

The object of both the suture method and incision method of Asian blepharoplasty is the same, namely to produce a double eyelid or supratarsal crease in the upper eyelid. In the suture method, the crease is created by placing three tiny stitches in the upper eyelid without creating a long incision. With the incision method, an incision is made across the upper eyelid, sutures are placed to create the fold, and sometimes fat is removed. Dr. Pratt will recommend the technique he thinks is best for you.

What does preparation for my Asian Blepharoplasty entail?

Prior to your surgery, you will attend your preoperative appointment with Dr. Pratt, at least two weeks prior to your surgery date. At that time, our staff will review your consent forms with you, answer any questions you might have, and the risks and benefits of surgery will be thoroughly reviewed. You will be given your prescriptions to be filled prior to your surgery. You will be given a list of medications and supplements to avoid for two weeks before and after surgery. If you are a smoker, you will be encouraged to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery. If possible, you should not smoke for at least two weeks following surgery.

What happens on the day of surgery?

Your eyelid surgery will be performed as an outpatient in our state of the art office-based facility in Kirkland under local anesthesia. You will arrive approximately one hour prior to surgery. Our OR staff will make you comfortable and acquaint you with our preop area. Dr. Pratt will answer any last minute questions and make the preoperative markings on your eyelids to guide him during the procedure. The procedure takes approximately one hour.

What is the recovery period like?

You may begin gently washing your face 4 days following surgery. Elevation of your head at all times is important in resolving the swelling and preventing any bleeding and minimizing bruising. You will be provided a full set of step by step instructions explaining what to do and not do after surgery. Swelling and bruising are usually minimal. Complete healing will take months, but as each day passes, a more beautiful, “brighter” you will be revealed. Most patients will be back to work and resuming most normal activities in three to five days following surgery. A shorter recovery is seen with the suture method. The sutures are dissolvable and thus do not require removal. Incisions usually heal quite inconspicuously.
